A day at the movies

Today has been a day of girl dates and movies. Saw Inception at the cinema, a brilliant action film, with great special effects. The premise has been compared to the Matrix, but the world-within-a-world/what-is-reality plotline is where the similarity ends. Yes, they can create and inhabit worlds. But I've always felt that the Matrix is less streamlined and I always found myself asking, why should I be caring about this?

My thoughts are that if you're going to the cinema to watch an action film, then this is a pretty good one. The special effects were good, it was gripping enough and didn't treat the audience as idiots (Reena: "I heard you have to fully concentrate all the way through!") They should, however, have gotten rid of the dead wife rubbish. There were other potential love relationships that could have been better developed, but fell by the wayside, whilst the dead wife went on. And on.

Next, accompanied by pizza and wine, Time Traveler's Wife (yuck - American spelling makes me wince). This film is like Marley and Me but minus the dog and plus A LOT of gratuitous nudity and a slightly pedophiliac undertone. The saving grace is Eric Bana's delicious chest and bottom! (Although his face still unfortunately reminds me of Henry VIII after The Other Boleyn Girl. Which is a shame. History, you have ruined this for me.)

Do you like... owls?

In spite of being originally from the country, the main focus of my weekends in London seems to be trying to avoid city life at all costs. This weekend, the attraction was Lambeth Country (!) Fair - of which my favourite part, without trying to recreate Alan Partridge, is was the owls.

And the rowing.

P.S. The sunflower is dead.

Summer is here

Too long has gone by since I have written on this blog. I could say that I hadn't seen enough fun things to warrant the taking of photos and posting, but looking back at the shit I put up here, that simply isn't true. So what's been going on? For starters, work. The Convocation, the Summer Science Exhibition and my Cafe Scientifique saw me dashing to the Southbank centre most days for the past two weeks. What else? Friends, dinners, I visited Lucy for a picnic by the canal and, of course, I have watched a fuck lot of cricket and the Wire.

I've also been procuring garden furniture and re-planting flowers (the heatwave and John's meanness over soil killed off the last batch) and thought I'd share a few photos on here, mainly because it is too hot to sit outside today and I am sunburnt.

All this has meant I haven't been reading as much as I'd like. I'm still enjoying The Portrait of a Lady. I read the first chapter of The Voluptuous Delights of Peanut Butter and Jam in anticipation of book group on Thursday, but couldn't get into it. Unrealistic writing in the voice of a child makes my skin crawl. There was no believable voice. I'm not going to finish it in time, but I couldn't really care less.
